Upholstery (Sofa Maker)
Make, repair, or replace upholstery for household furniture. Fit, install, and secure material on frames, using hand tools, power tools, glue, staples. Align parts or workpieces to ensure proper assembly.
1. Stretch webbing and fabric, using webbing stretchers.
2. Collaborate with interior designers to decorate rooms and coordinate furnishing fabrics.
3. Maintain records of time required to perform each job.
4. Pick up and deliver furniture.
5. Repair furniture frames and refinishes exposed wood.
6. Adjust or replace webbing, padding, and/or springs, and secure them in place.
7. Attach bindings or apply solutions to edges of cut material to prevent ravelling.
8. Attach fasteners, grommets, buttons, buckles, ornamental trim, and other accessories to covers or frames, using hand tools.
9. Build furniture up with loose fibre stuffing, cotton felt, and/or foam padding to form smooth rounded surfaces.
10. Discuss upholstery fabrics, colours, and styles with customers, and provide cost estimates.
11. Draw cutting lines on material following patterns, templates, sketches, or blueprints, using chalk, pencils, paint, or other methods.
12. Examine furniture frames, upholstery, springs, and webbing to locate defects.
13. Fit, install, and secure material on frames, using hand tools, power tools, glue, cement, and/or staples.
14. Interweave and fasten strips of webbing to the backs and undersides of furniture, using small hand tools and fasteners.
15. Make, repair, and/or replace automobile upholstery and convertible and vinyl tops, using knowledge of fabric and upholstery methods.
16. Make, restore, and/or create custom upholstered furniture, using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods.
17. Measure and cut new covering materials, using patterns and measuring and cutting instruments, following sketches and design specifications.
18. Operate sewing machines or sew upholstery by hand to seam cushions and join various sections of covering material.
19. Read work orders, and apply knowledge and experience with materials in order to determine types and amounts of materials required to cover workpieces.
20. Remove the covering, webbing, padding, and/or defective springs from workpieces, using hand tools such as hammers and tack pullers.
21. Sew rips or tears in material, or create tufting, using needles and thread.
Skills & Experience
– High school graduate or equivalent
– 3-4 years’ experience working Upholstery (Sofa Maker), furniture manufacturing, can utilize related machines.
– Able to Read and can work in Cutting Patron Sofa is an advantage.
– Able to read/use a ruler, add/subtract and calculate fractions
– Able to stand, walk and move for up to eight hours per day.
